Orchestra dancer gangraped in MP forest, 6 arrested, say police

A 22-year-old orchestra dancer was gangraped by six men in Madhya Pradesh’s Singrauli district. Police arrested all six men on Friday. The crime happened on Wednesday night when the woman and her team were returning home after a dance program in Shitul village.

The team had eight members, including four women. They were traveling on four bikes. The woman was on the last bike with a male companion. A group of men on two-wheelers followed them, stopped their bike, and attacked them near Rajmilan intersection.

The men beat up the woman's companion and dragged her into a nearby forest. There, they gangraped her and took away her mobile phone before running away.

The injured man went back to inform the other team members, who then called the police at Mada police station. By the time police started searching, the woman had escaped from the forest and called her sister, who was also in the orchestra team.

The survivor later told police that the accused were present at the event. They had made bad comments about the girls dancing on stage and started following them after the program.

The orchestra team also said that when they went to the police for help, the officers took them to the Bhadaura outpost instead of searching for the woman. They also accused the police of blaming and beating them.

Singrauli Superintendent of Police Manish Khatri said that all six accused had been arrested. He also said they are looking into the allegations against the police officers.
