Actor and politician Kamal Haasan recently talked about the importance of language for Tamilians and warned people not to take it lightly. His comments came amid a growing fight between the Centre and Tamil Nadu’s government over the New Education Policy (NEP) that includes a three-language policy, which means teaching Hindi along with Tamil and English. Haasan’s speech took place on the 8th anniversary of his political party, Makkal Needhi Maiyam (MNM).
Kamal Haasan said, “Tamilians have fought and even died for their language. Don't play with this. Even children in Tamil Nadu know which language they need. They understand what language they want.” He reminded everyone that language is a serious issue for Tamils.
The problem started when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin refused to accept the three-language policy in schools, which includes Hindi. Stalin and the BJP (the ruling party at the Centre) have been fighting over this. Stalin had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking for the release of money meant for Tamil Nadu schools. He also expressed worry that the government might not give the funds if Tamil Nadu does not agree to the NEP.
In his letter, Stalin said that this situation had caused fear and confusion among students and people in the state. He asked PM Modi to step in and help resolve the issue.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan responded by saying that southern states should focus on the welfare of students, and not make politics out of the issue. He added that the NEP was meant to improve education in India, and it didn’t force any language on students.
Pradhan said the Tamil Nadu government was looking at the NEP in the wrong way and making it a political problem. He mentioned that many other states had already accepted the NEP, even if they had different political views. He added that the NEP would open up new opportunities for students and improve education in the country.
In response, Stalin criticized the Centre for pushing Hindi on Tamil Nadu. He warned, “Don’t play with the identity of Tamils. We will not allow anything that harms Tamil language or culture in Tamil Nadu.” Stalin said that the Centre was using the NEP to promote Hindi, not to improve education. He also said that the Centre was trying to create divisions by imposing Hindi.
On the other hand, Prime Minister Modi made a statement that seemed to calm the situation. He said that India’s languages have always lived together peacefully and influenced each other positively. His message was that language differences should not cause problems, but should be seen as something that makes India unique.
This argument about language, education, and identity continues to be a big issue in Tamil Nadu, with leaders from different political parties strongly speaking out about how language policies should be handled in India.
