A bus conductor was beaten up because he did not reply in Marathi. The police have arrested four people for the attack. The incident happened on Friday near Belagavi, a town close to the Maharashtra-Karnataka border.

The conductor, 51-year-old Mahadevappa Mallappa Hukkeri, was working when a woman and a man got on the bus at Sulebhavi village. The woman spoke to him in Marathi. Hukkeri told her that he did not understand Marathi and asked her to speak in Kannada.

The woman got angry and started abusing him. She said he must learn Marathi. Soon, many people gathered and attacked Hukkeri. They hit him on the head and body.

He was taken to the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences. Doctors said he had minor injuries and was not in danger.

The police filed a case and arrested four people for attacking the conductor. But later, a 14-year-old girl complained against Hukkeri. She said he had used bad words for her.

Because of her complaint, the police also filed a case against Hukkeri under the POCSO Act, which protects children from harm. A police officer said no arrest had been made in this case yet. "We will check the complaint and then take action," he said.

Belagavi has many Marathi-speaking people. Some of them want the town to be part of Maharashtra. But Kannada-speaking people and the Karnataka government do not agree.
