MS Dhoni, the former captain of India and World Cup winner, says playing in the IPL at 43 is tough and requires a lot of hard work. He explained that although he only plays for two months in a year, he needs to match the younger players to be successful. Dhoni said that no one will treat him differently because of his age, so he has to work harder than others to stay fit and ready for the season.
Dhoni confirmed that he will play for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2025, which will start on March 21. He also made it clear that he is not retiring anytime soon and wants to keep playing as long as he enjoys the game and can help his team.
At 43, Dhoni will be one of the oldest players in the tournament. He will play as an uncapped player because of a new rule by the BCCI that allows players who haven't played for India in the last five years to be considered uncapped. Dhoni was kept by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 4 crore for the IPL 2025 season.
Dhoni said that the IPL is one of the toughest tournaments. "I play for just a couple of months every year, but I want to enjoy it like I did when I first started," he said. He added that to keep up with younger players, he has to work hard for six to eight months before the IPL starts. "Nobody cares about your age. You have to play at the same level," he said.
Since he retired from international cricket in 2021, Dhoni has spent more time with his family and friends but still trains hard for the IPL season. He has kept himself fit, even with a knee injury. In IPL 2024, Dhoni played all 14 matches for Chennai Super Kings, scoring 161 runs at a great strike rate of 220. He continued to keep wickets for his team, although he batted lower in the order to focus on making important contributions.
Dhoni said his reasons for playing cricket have changed over the years. When he started, his main goal was to play for India. "The biggest motivation for me was to represent my country," Dhoni said. He added that he always wanted to help India win.
Now that he is no longer playing for India, Dhoni says his love for cricket is what keeps him playing. "It’s the love for the game that keeps me going," he explained.
The IPL 2025 season will begin with Chennai Super Kings facing Mumbai Indians on March 22 in Chennai. Fans are excited to see Dhoni back on the field, still working hard and enjoying the game.
