The Lokayukta, today, submitted its final investigation report to the Karnataka High Court's Dharwad Bench regarding the corruption in the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) land allotment case. The high court had earlier given the Lokayukta until January 28 to present a complete report on the matter.
The report was prepared by the Additional Director General of Police and the Inspector General of Police from the Lokayukta. It followed a preliminary report submitted earlier by Lokayukta Superintendent of Police, TJ Udesh. The investigation report contains key information about the case, including statements from over 25 people, which were recorded under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Details of the Report
The report highlighted serious issues with land allotments in the MUDA. It covered irregularities in allotting 14 sites in Vijayanagara and 3.16 acres of land in Kesare village, located in Mysuru taluk. The investigation included statements from the main accused in the case, such as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, his wife BM Parvathi, her brother BM Mallikarjunaswamy, and J Devaraju, who sold the land to Mallikarjunaswamy. These individuals are considered the key accused in the case.
The investigation looked at activities dating back to 1994 and continued up to 2024. The Lokayukta gathered strong evidence, including audio and video recordings, forensic science laboratory (FSL) reports, hard disks, CDs, and pen drives. Important documents such as RTC records, land conversion papers, ownership transfer documents, and official correspondence were also included in the report.
What the Case Involves
The main allegation in the case is that the accused misused their power to allocate land and sites unfairly. Several former MUDA commissioners, chairpersons, engineers, urban planners, MLAs, MLCs, and the then Additional Deputy Commissioner are said to be involved in these irregularities. The Karnataka High Court will now decide the role of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah based on the evidence and statements in the report.
The scandal first came to light when the irregularities in land allotments by MUDA were discovered. Political parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) quickly condemned the corruption. Opposition leaders have called for the resignation of Siddaramaiah and have criticized the Lokayukta’s investigation, claiming that the case has not been handled properly.
