On Saturday, the Narendra Modi government announced the list of Padma award winners for 2025, one of India’s most prestigious civilian awards. The Ministry of Home Affairs revealed that this year, seven people will receive the Padma Vibhushan, 19 people will receive the Padma Bhushan, and 113 people will receive the Padma Shri.
The President of India will present these awards during a special ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in March or April this year.
Among the seven Padma Vibhushan awardees is the late Sharda Sinha, a famous folk singer who was honored posthumously. Known for her iconic Chhath songs, Sinha passed away on November 5 last year at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.
Another posthumous recipient of the Padma Vibhushan is MT Vasudevan Nair, a veteran Malayalam author who passed away last December. Nair, who had a career spanning more than seventy years, wrote nine novels, 19 collections of short stories, and 54 screenplays. He was also a director and published numerous collections of essays and memoirs.
Other recipients of the Padma Vibhushan include Duvvur Nageshwar Reddy (medicine), Justice (Retd) JS Khehar (public affairs), Kumudini Rajnikant Lakhia (art), Lakshminarayana Subramaniam (art), and Osamu Suzuki from Japan (trade and industry).
This year, economist Bibek Debroy was posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan. He passed away last November at the age of 69. Debroy was known for his work as the chairman of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council, a role he held since 2017.
Sushil Kumar Modi, a senior leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was also awarded the Padma Bhushan posthumously. He died in May last year after fighting cancer for a long time.
Another posthumous awardee is Pankaj Udhas, a renowned ghazal singer who passed away last year.
Additionally, former Maharashtra Chief Minister and ex-Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi (posthumous) and filmmaker Shekhar Kapur were honored with the Padma Bhushan.
The list of 113 Padma Shri awardees includes popular singer Arijit Singh, former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, and Arundhati Bhattacharya, former chairperson of the State Bank of India (SBI).
Dinamalar publisher Lakshmipathy Ramasubbaiyer received the Padma Shri for his contributions to literature, education, and journalism.
These prestigious awards recognize the outstanding contributions of individuals in various fields such as arts, literature, medicine, public affairs, trade, and industry. The Padma Awards continue to celebrate the dedication and excellence of people who have made significant impacts in their respective areas.
