Hindu nationalism, Khalistani extremism flagged as new threats: UK report

A UK government commission, set up in August 2024 by the Home Office, has flagged Hindu nationalist extremism and Khalistani extremism as two of the nine new threats to national security. This report, which was leaked, is the first time the UK has officially recognized "Hindu nationalist extremism" and "Hindutva" as ideologies of concern. The recognition follows the 2022 clashes in Leicester, where there were violent protests between British Hindus and Muslims after an India-Pakistan cricket match.

The commission, led by UK Home Department Secretary of State Yvette Cooper, mentioned several groups and movements as potential threats to the UK. Among them were Islamist extremism, extreme right-wing views, extreme misogyny, pro-Khalistan extremism, and Hindu nationalist extremism. This document was shared with the think tank 'Policy Exchange', which reported its findings.

The leaked report stresses the importance of tackling these ideologies. It particularly focuses on how some people supporting the Khalistani movement are promoting violence and spreading harmful ideas. It also points out how some Khalistani groups are using hateful messages against Muslims, often with misleading claims about child exploitation and spreading conspiracy theories about how Britain and India are supposedly working against Sikhs.

The report also acknowledges concerns about India's actions in other countries. It mentions fears about the Indian government being involved in violent acts against Sikhs in places like Canada and the United States.

This report is not a new government policy, but it has raised alarms about the growing threats posed by these extremist groups. Home Office Minister Dan Jarvis explained that the report does not mean the UK will change its definition of extremism, and it is not part of new policy changes. Instead, it is a warning that these ideologies need to be carefully monitored and tackled.

In addition to Hindu nationalist and Khalistani extremism, the report also warns against other threats such as environmental extremism, left-wing extremism, anarchism, and single-issue violence. It shows how many different groups can spread dangerous ideas that harm society.
