The father of a 23-year-old woman software engineer, Esther Anuhya, who was tragically murdered, spoke out after the Supreme Court acquitted the man accused of killing her. The court’s decision left him heartbroken, and he said he would leave everything to God, adding that there was nothing he could do about it.
The Supreme Court had recently overturned the conviction of Chandrabhan Sudam Sanap, the man who was originally sentenced to death for the rape and murder of Esther. The court said that there were serious problems with the prosecution’s case and that the evidence wasn’t strong enough to prove Sanap’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
Esther Anuhya, who worked as a software engineer at TCS in Mumbai, had just returned to the city after spending two weeks with her family during the Christmas and New Year holidays. On January 16, 2014, she was found dead near Kanjur Marg. She had been last seen leaving the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus railway station.
The police quickly arrested Sanap, accusing him of murdering and raping Esther. He was convicted and sentenced to death by a lower court, a decision that was upheld by the Bombay High Court. However, the Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of his acquittal, saying that the prosecution’s case had too many flaws.
Esther’s father, S Jonathan Prasad, who is a retired professor, expressed his deep sadness and confusion after the Supreme Court’s decision. Speaking to the press, he said, “What can we do? We weren’t even aware that he had gone to the Supreme Court. But what can I do? I leave it to God, and whatever happens, I will never get my daughter back.”
He reflected on the long, painful journey his family had gone through over the last decade. “Ten years ago, we were relieved that some justice was done. But now everything has changed. I don’t understand why. I still remember how difficult those days were for me in Mumbai,” he added.
Despite the pain, Esther’s father praised the Mumbai Police for their hard work in solving the case. He noted that the police had carefully recreated the crime scene and found Esther’s ID card and other belongings at Sanap’s home. Even though there were no eyewitnesses, the police gathered enough circumstantial evidence to arrest the right person.
When asked if he would pursue the case further or ask for a review of the Supreme Court’s decision, Prasad explained that it would be too difficult for him to do so at his age. “I’m over 70 years old, and it’s very hard for me to travel now. My wife is also ill and diabetic. I can’t continue with this fight. I just want to live my last days in peace,” he said.
Though the verdict has left the family in grief, they now just want to move on and find some peace after years of struggle.
