A tragic incident took place on Monday evening in Burari, north Delhi, when a newly constructed four-storey building collapsed. At least two people lost their lives in the disaster, including two minor girls, aged 7 and 17. So far, 14 people have been rescued, but officials fear that more people could be trapped under the debris. At least 12 others have been injured in the collapse, with five people being moved to a trauma unit due to the seriousness of their injuries. The injured victims include both adults and children.
The building collapsed around 6:30 pm in Kaushik Enclave, Burari. Police received the distress call at 6:58 pm. Immediately after the incident, a large-scale rescue operation was launched. The operation is still ongoing and involves several agencies, including the Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Services, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Authorities have cordoned off the area to prevent any further accidents.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi expressed her sorrow over the incident and ordered the local administration to ensure quick relief and rescue efforts. She assured the public that every possible form of help would be provided to those affected by the collapse. She posted on social media, calling the incident "extremely sad" and confirmed that she had spoken to the local administration to speed up the relief operations.
Bharatiya Janata Party MP, Manoj Tiwari, also visited the site of the collapse and observed the ongoing rescue work. Speaking to the media, he suggested that negligence may have played a role in the collapse. He also shared the police’s estimate that around 20 people could still be trapped under the rubble. He added that while the building had been completed, some finishing work was still being carried out. According to reports, 12 people have been rescued so far, but the search continues.
The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, but authorities are working tirelessly to find and rescue anyone still trapped inside.
