On the eve of Republic Day 2025, the Padma Awards, which are India’s highest civilian honors, were given to 139 people. Among them, seven received the Padma Vibhushan, 19 received the Padma Bhushan, and 113 received the Padma Shri. However, this year, many people have raised questions about some of the choices made by the jury.
One of these people is national award-winning singer Sonu Nigam. He has expressed his disappointment over the jury ignoring some of India’s most legendary artists. In particular, he mentioned famous singers like Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Alka Yagnik, Shreya Ghoshal, and Sunidhi Chauhan.
Sonu Nigam shared his thoughts in a video posted on Instagram. He said that many deserving singers have been left out of the awards list, despite their huge contributions to the music industry. He started by talking about two of India’s greatest singers: Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar. Sonu said, “There are two legendary singers who have inspired the entire world of music. Mohammed Rafi was given the Padma Shri, but he deserves much more. And then, there’s Kishore Kumar, who hasn’t even received the Padma Shri.”
Sonu also mentioned Alka Yagnik, who has had a long and successful career, yet has not received any awards. He said, “Alka Yagnik has had an amazing career, but she hasn’t received any honor yet.” He also pointed out the brilliance of Shreya Ghoshal, who has been one of the leading voices in Indian music for many years. He believes she deserves recognition as well. Additionally, he praised Sunidhi Chauhan, who he believes has inspired a whole generation of music lovers with her unique voice.
In his video, Sonu Nigam urged his fans and followers to share their opinions about other deserving artists who should have been honored with the Padma Awards. In the caption of the video, he wrote: “India and its pending Padma Awardees.”
Sonu Nigam’s post got a lot of reactions, including one from singer Shraddha Pandit, who agreed with his views. She commented, “Gospel truth spoken @sonunigamofficial.”
It’s also worth noting that Sonu Nigam himself received the Padma Shri in 2022. However, he had expressed his disappointment at the time, saying that the award had come too late for him. He even shared that when he was given the Padma Shri, he responded by saying, “Don’t you think it’s too late in the day to give me Padma Shri?”
Sonu Nigam has sung more than 10,000 songs in many Indian languages. While he is most known for his Hindi songs, he has also sung in languages like Kannada, Odia, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Nepali, Bhojpuri, and others. He continues to be a prominent figure in the Indian music industry and has earned admiration and respect for his contribution to music over the years.
