A chaotic situation unfolded at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, during the Mauni Amavasya celebrations at the Mahakumbh Mela on Wednesday. A barrier near Sangam Nose broke, leading to a stampede-like rush as thousands of devotees gathered for the sacred ritual.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally reached out to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath multiple times to monitor the situation closely. He reviewed developments and called for immediate relief efforts. The Prime Minister emphasized the need for quick action to restore calm and ensure the safety of devotees.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, assuring full support from the central government in handling the situation.
Special Executive Officer of the Kumbh Mela Authority, Akanksha Rana, "A stampede-like situation occurred after the barrier broke at Sangam Nose. Some people have been injured and are receiving treatment. Fortunately, no one is in serious condition."
However, sources familiar with the incident, speaking anonymously, stated that at least 15 bodies have been brought to a hospital for examination. Rescue operations are underway at the site, and authorities are working to manage the situation.
In response to the tragic events, the administration urged devotees to leave the Triveni Sangam area. The Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad president, Mahant Ravindra Puri, announced that the seers had decided to call off the Mauni Amavasya bathing rituals.
"You all saw what happened in the morning. That’s why we made this decision. All our saints and seers were ready for the ritual when we received the news. So, we had to call off our participation in the 'snan' (holy bath) today," he said.
Mahant Hari Giri, General Secretary of Akhara Parishad and patron of the Juna Akhara, also urged devotees to bathe in the Ganga wherever they are and then return home. "Bathing in the Ganga, whether within or outside Prayagraj, holds the same spiritual merit," he said.
The situation came amid massive crowds gathered for the Mauni Amavasya rituals. On Tuesday, nearly 5 crore people arrived in Prayagraj in anticipation of the festivities. The Uttar Pradesh government estimated that this number could grow to 10 crore by Wednesday.
Efforts are ongoing to ensure safety and provide care for those affected by the unfortunate incident. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are working to bring everything back to normal.
