On Sunday, Maharashtra reported the first suspected death due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). The patient, who was 40 years old, passed away at a private hospital in Solapur. Meanwhile, GBS cases in Pune have risen dramatically, reaching a total of 101, which is causing concern among health officials.
The patient who died had been suffering from diarrhea and also showed symptoms of cough and cold. He was admitted to the ICU of a private hospital on January 18. Initially, his condition improved, and he was moved to a regular room. However, his health worsened when he began having trouble breathing. Tragically, he passed away after being readmitted to the ICU.
Pune is currently facing a surge in GBS cases. In just the last 24 hours, 28 new cases have been reported, bringing the total number of GBS cases in the city to 101. Normally, GBS cases in the area are rare, with only two or fewer reported each month, making this sudden rise unexpected.
Out of the 101 patients in Pune, 16 are on ventilators, struggling to breathe. Doctors have also noticed GBS symptoms in 19 children under the age of 9. The 50-80 age group is also heavily affected, with 23 cases reported. Laboratory tests on samples from these patients have found the presence of Campylobacter jejuni bacteria, which is known to cause GBS.
In response to the rising cases, health authorities have stepped up water testing, especially in areas where most cases have been reported. On Saturday, test results showed high levels of E. coli bacteria in a well near the Khadakwasla Dam, which is Pune's main water source. However, officials have not yet confirmed whether this well is still being used.
As of Sunday, the health department has surveyed more than 25,500 households to identify more GBS cases and trace the source of the outbreak.
What exactly is Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)
GBS is a rare illness where the body’s immune system wrongly attacks the nerves, usually after a bacterial or viral infection. It causes weakness, and in some cases, paralysis, along with other health problems.
Doctors say that 80% of patients with GBS can walk again independently within six months of their treatment, but for some, it might take a year or even longer to fully recover.
Treating GBS can be expensive, as it requires a special treatment called immunoglobulin (IVIG) injections, which cost around Rs 20,000 each.
To help families with the high treatment costs, Maharashtra’s Finance Minister Ajit Pawar announced that GBS treatment will be provided for free at government hospitals across the state.
