In a highly unusual and rare medical case, doctors in Maharashtra's Buldhana district made a surprising discovery — a baby was found inside the stomach of an unborn child.
The condition, known as "foetus-in-fetu," is an extremely rare congenital anomaly. It occurs when one twin becomes enveloped inside the body of the other during the early stages of development. So far, only around 200 such cases have been reported worldwide, with just 15 to 20 documented in India.
The unusual case was identified at a government hospital when a 32-year-old pregnant woman, who was in her ninth month, underwent routine sonography just two days ago.
Dr. Prasad Agarwal, the gynecologist who spotted the anomaly, shared his experience: “At first, I was shocked when I saw the sonography images. It looked very unusual, so I re-examined them carefully. That’s when I realized it was a foetus-in-fetu case.”
He explained that this discovery went unnoticed during earlier scans due to the extreme rarity of the condition. "Nobody expects to find something like this during a routine check-up," Dr. Agarwal added.
To confirm his findings, Dr. Agarwal consulted with other doctors and conducted a detailed examination. After careful study, it was confirmed that the undeveloped foetus was indeed inside the unborn baby’s abdomen.
Dr. Bhagwat Bhusari, the Civil Surgeon at the Buldhana Hospital, provided further insights. "The mother is expected to have a normal delivery," he said reassuringly. "However, the baby may need immediate medical attention after birth to ensure its health and well-being."
Experts say that the exact cause of this rare condition is still not fully understood. It is believed to occur due to an anomaly during the formation of identical twins. Unlike a typical twin pregnancy, the parasitic twin in these cases cannot survive independently.
This remarkable case has drawn attention not only for its medical uniqueness but also for the successful detection by the doctors involved. Medical professionals hope that this discovery will raise awareness about rare congenital conditions and help improve diagnostic techniques in the future.
