Rahul Gandhi echoes BJP's 'sheeshmahal', Kejriwal retorts with 'rajmahal

In a recent election rally in Delhi, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi targeted Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi Chief Minister and leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Gandhi echoed a criticism made by the BJP, accusing Kejriwal of building an extravagant "sheeshmahal" for himself, referring to his expensive official residence. Gandhi also blamed Kejriwal for being involved in what he called the "largest liquor scam" in India’s history.

Speaking at the rally in Patparganj, Delhi, Gandhi aimed at Kejriwal’s leadership, saying the Delhi CM had promised to help the poor when he entered politics. However, Gandhi pointed out that when Delhi faced communal riots in 2020, Kejriwal was nowhere to be found. He reminded the crowd that Kejriwal had once used to drive a small car when he started in politics and had promised to bring a new, clean kind of politics. However according to Gandhi, when people needed help, especially during the violence, Kejriwal was absent.

Gandhi also mocked Kejriwal's lifestyle, saying, "You promised to do clean politics, but you got involved in the biggest liquor scam. We've also seen the pictures of your house, it’s like a sheeshmahal." Gandhi's remarks were an attempt to criticize Kejriwal for his lifestyle choices, contrasting them with his earlier promises.

Kejriwal quickly responded, firing back at Gandhi's criticism. He questioned why Gandhi had remained silent about the Prime Minister’s official residence, calling it a "rajmahal" (palace). Kejriwal accused Gandhi of repeating the BJP's language and wanted to know why Gandhi wasn't speaking out about the BJP's practices. He even asked, "Tell the public what agreement has been made between the BJP and Congress?"

This back-and-forth over the leaders’ residences was a continuation of a political attack that began when the BJP had labeled Kejriwal’s official residence as a “sheeshmahal,” claiming that Kejriwal had spent too much money on it.

In addition to his criticism of Kejriwal, Rahul Gandhi also targeted Manish Sisodia, a senior AAP leader. Gandhi called Sisodia the "architect" of the alleged liquor scam, suggesting that he had played a key role in the corruption. Gandhi claimed that Sisodia was avoiding responsibility by running away from his seat.
Gandhi didn't stop there. He also attacked the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), accusing them of spreading hate and violence throughout India. He said, "On one side, we have the people of the BJP-RSS who spread hatred and violence. On the other hand, we have the Congress Party with our ideology. We open a shop of love in the market of hatred. We don't want an India of hatred, fear, and violence. We want a shop of love."

Through these speeches, Rahul Gandhi made it clear that the upcoming election battle in Delhi would be one where party leaders would not hold back in criticizing each other’s actions and beliefs.
