The Mumbai Coastal Road project, a big road-making plan, is now facing strong complaints after a video on social media showed bad patchwork on the new road. An X user named Eternal Drift shared the video and said that the road looks damaged even though it was called a world-class project.
The user was very unhappy and said that spending ₹13,000 crore on this road should have given better quality. He also asked why the construction company, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) were not being held responsible for this issue.
“This is very disappointing. Mumbai’s ₹14,000 crore Coastal Road already looks like patchwork. I feel cheated – this was supposed to be a top-quality road. L&T and BMC must answer for this. Is this what we paid for?” the user wrote, adding hashtags like #Mumbai, #CoastalRoad, and #InfrastructureFail.
After this, the post went viral and got more than 1 million views. Seeing this, BMC gave a reply and tried to explain why the road looks damaged. They said the asphalting (road covering) work on the northbound part of the bridge near Haji Ali was done just before the monsoon season. Because of this, some parts of the roadwork later developed small cracks and gaps.
BMC also said they did a quick repair using mastic asphalt during the monsoon to stop further damage. They promised that a new proper layer of asphalt would be added soon to make the road strong.
But the X user was still not happy and asked why the road was already looking bad just after it was made. Many others also raised questions about the quality of such an expensive project and how long it will last.
The Mumbai Coastal Road is made to help reduce heavy traffic in Mumbai. It connects Marine Drive in South Mumbai to Kandivali in the western suburbs through the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The first eight-kilometer part of the road was opened in March 2024. The second part, which was opened in June 2024, was planned to reduce travel time between Marine Drive and Haji Ali from 50 minutes to just 8 minutes.
This issue has started a big debate about how public money is used for big projects. Many people are now asking for better checks on road-making so that such problems do not happen again.
