Kerala BJP Leader Sent to 14-Day Police Custody in Hate Speech Case

BJP leader PC George has been sent to 14 days of police custody by the Erattupetta Judicial First Class Magistrate Court. This happened because he made a hate speech. After the court’s decision, George was taken to Kottayam Medical College for a check-up as he has some health problems.

Earlier, PC George surrendered before the Erattupetta court in Kottayam. The Kerala High Court had rejected his request for anticipatory bail. The case was filed after he made controversial statements about Muslims during a TV debate in January. A Muslim Youth League leader complained about this speech, saying it was communal and offensive.

During the TV debate, PC George said,
"I am sitting in Erattupetta and saying this. Out of the 40,000 people here, 38,600 are Muslims. There are no such communal forces without any conscience like you anywhere in this world. Do you have a conscience? Do you have a soft approach towards people from other religious groups? You should learn about the diversity we show. Are we saying that any Muslims should be killed? If you are a Muslim, then you are communal. It has become like that. You don’t want India but Pakistan. Go to Pakistan."

Because of these statements, the Erattupetta police registered a case against him under different sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Kerala Police Act. He was charged under BNS Sections 196 (1) a, 299, and 120 (o).

Police officers went to George’s house in Poonjar near Erattupetta to arrest him, but he was not at home. Earlier, the police had tried to take him into custody, but George had asked for two more days to appear in court.

At first, the court sent George to police custody until 6 PM because of a small mistake in the police's custody application. The court asked the police to correct the mistake and submit it again. Later, the court decided on 14 days of custody.

After his arrest, PC George apologized on Facebook for his words. He said,
"I take back my statement that all Muslims in India are terrorists. I apologize to my Muslim brothers and sisters who love this country and felt hurt. But I know that a small group among them has anti-national thoughts. I will always oppose them and those who support them silently."

This case has caused debates in Kerala. Many political leaders have criticized George’s words, while his supporters say his statements were misunderstood. The police investigation is still going on, and George will stay in custody for further questioning.
