India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has criticized leaders of Bangladesh’s temporary government for blaming India for many problems. He said these complaints were “completely foolish” and did not make sense. His statement came a few days after he met Touhid Hossain, an important official in Bangladesh’s caretaker government, in Oman. The relationship between India and Bangladesh has become more tense in recent months, and Jaishankar’s words show India is not happy with Bangladesh’s behavior.
Speaking at an event in New Delhi, Jaishankar said that Bangladesh’s leaders cannot keep blaming India while also saying they want a good relationship. “If every day, someone in the Bangladesh government blames India for everything, it is not fair. Some of these complaints are completely foolish. You cannot say, ‘I want good relations with India,’ but then every morning, blame India for all your problems. They must decide what they really want,” he said.
Jaishankar reminded everyone that India has a strong history with Bangladesh, which started in 1971 when India helped Bangladesh become free from Pakistan. He said India still values this friendship, but Bangladesh’s new leaders must be clear about how they want to work with India.
Jaishankar talked about two big problems in India-Bangladesh relations. The first is attacks on minority groups, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh. “We are very worried about the violence against minorities. It affects how we see Bangladesh. We have spoken about it and will continue to do so,” he said.
For months, India has raised concerns about the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh. The violence increased after former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina lost power in August 2024 and fled to India. Many people in Bangladesh had protested against her rule, saying she was unfair and gave too much importance to India.
Bangladesh’s new government, however, has dismissed concerns about violence against Hindus. Instead, they are asking India to send Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh. They accuse her of ordering violence against protesters before she left the country.
The second problem, Jaishankar said, is Bangladesh’s internal politics. He explained that different people may have different opinions on this issue. However, he made it clear that India wants peace in Bangladesh. “India wants things to be calm. But we do not like that Bangladesh keeps speaking against India,” he said.
His words show that India is worried about how Bangladesh’s new leaders are handling things. The new government, led by Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, has not had good relations with India. Bangladesh has accused India of interfering in its politics, while India is worried about growing anti-India feelings in Bangladesh.
Jaishankar had earlier met Touhid Hossain in New York in September 2024 during a United Nations meeting. That meeting was the first official talk between India and Bangladesh after Hasina left power. But even after that, relations have not improved. Both sides continue to blame each other, and the problems between the two countries are still growing.
