Canada’s new visa rules may create big trouble for Indian students, workers

Canada has made new rules for people coming to the country. These rules will create big problems for many students, workers, and migrants, especially from India. The rules started in February, and now Canadian officers have full power to change visa status anytime if they think it is needed.

Under these new rules, officers at the border can stop people from entering Canada or even cancel their visa after they have already arrived. This includes visas for students, workers, and tourists. If an officer feels a person will not leave Canada when their visa ends, they can cancel their visa immediately. The officer has full power to decide, and there is no way to fight against it.

Many people are worried about these new rules, especially Indian students and workers. Canada is a very popular place for Indian students, and right now, more than 4.2 lakh Indian students are studying there. If their visa is canceled, they will have to return to India.

If someone is stopped at the airport, they will be sent back home right away. If their visa is canceled while they are in Canada, they will get a notice to leave the country within a few days. This will cause huge problems for people who have spent a lot of money on education, housing, and travel. It is not clear if they will get their money back.

Tourists will also face problems because of these changes. In the first six months of 2024, Canada gave visas to more than 3.6 lakh Indians. The same number of people visited in 2023. But now, many people might not get visas, or their travel plans may be ruined if their visas are canceled.

People who are affected by these rules will get a message from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) by email and in their IRCC account. But there is no information about what will happen to the money they have already spent on education, rent, or loans if they are forced to leave.

These new rules come after Canada closed the Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa program in November 2024. The SDS program was very helpful for Indian students as it made the visa process faster if they could show proof of money. Its closure has already made it difficult for Indian students, and now, these new rules have made things even worse.

Many students, workers, and their families are now scared about their future in Canada. With no clear rules, thousands of people could suddenly lose their visa, be forced to leave, and lose their dreams of studying and working in Canada.
