The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the biggest and most spiritual gatherings in the world, began this morning in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. More than 50 lakh people took part in the first holy dip at Sangam, the place where the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers meet. This ancient event, known for drawing massive crowds, is expected to attract over 40 crore people to Prayagraj, which is more than the total population of the US and Russia combined.
The Kumbh Mela, which happens once every 12 years, is being held across about 4,000 hectares of land and will continue until February 26. It is set to provide a huge boost to the economy of Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state. The state has allocated a budget of around Rs 7,000 crore for the 45-day-long event, showing its importance.
The economic impact of the Maha Kumbh Mela in 2025 is projected to be enormous. Experts believe it could generate up to Rs 2 lakh crore in revenue for Uttar Pradesh. If each of the 40 crore visitors spends an average of Rs 5,000, the total could reach Rs 2 lakh crore. Some estimates suggest that if the average spending increases to Rs 10,000, the economic benefit could go up to Rs 4 lakh crore. This is expected to boost both the nominal and real GDP of the state by over 1 percent.
In 2019, the Ardh Kumbh Mela, a smaller version of the Kumbh, attracted around 24 crore pilgrims and contributed Rs 1.2 lakh crore to the state’s economy. With a projected 40 crore visitors this year, the Maha Kumbh is expected to generate up to Rs 2 lakh crore in economic activity.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the Maha Kumbh as the world's largest temporary city, capable of accommodating between 50 lakh to one crore people at any given time. According to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), the event will also boost various sectors. The food and beverage industry, including items like packaged foods, water, biscuits, juices, and meals, is expected to contribute Rs 20,000 crore. Religious items and offerings, such as oil, lamps, Ganga water, idols, incense sticks, and religious books, will also generate about Rs 20,000 crore.
Other sectors like transportation, logistics, and tourism will also benefit. Transportation services, including local and interstate services, freight, and taxis, are estimated to generate Rs 10,000 crore, while tourism services like tour guides, travel packages, and related activities could add another Rs 10,000 crore. Temporary medical camps, Ayurvedic products, and medicines are expected to generate Rs 3,000 crore. Services like e-ticketing, digital payments, Wi-Fi, and mobile charging stations are expected to bring in Rs 1,000 crore, while entertainment and media, including advertising and promotional activities, could contribute Rs 10,000 crore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his joy at the start of the Maha Kumbh Mela, calling it a “very special day” for the people who value Indian traditions and culture. He praised the gathering, which brings together countless people in a sacred confluence of faith and devotion. He also wished the pilgrims and tourists a wonderful stay in Prayagraj.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath shared similar sentiments, describing the event as a beautiful confluence of cultures and a message of unity in diversity. The Maha Kumbh Mela is seen as the world’s largest spiritual and cultural gathering, and it is a place where people come to meditate, take a holy bath, and experience faith and modernity together.
The Kumbh Mela takes place every 12 years, rotating between four sacred sites in India: Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik, and Prayagraj. The event is determined by specific astrological positions of the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter, and it marks the holiest time in Hinduism. Pilgrims take a dip in the river during the event, believing it purifies their souls and washes away their sins.
This year, the most crowded days are expected to be January 14 (Makar Sankranti, the first Shahi Snan), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya, the second Shahi Snan), February 3 (Basant Panchami, the third Shahi Snan), February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and February 26 (Mahashivratri, the final Snan).
Preparations for the Maha Kumbh Mela have been extensive. About 1,50,000 tents have been set up to house the visitors, with 3,000 kitchens, 1,45,000 restrooms, and 99 parking lots. Over 40,000 police officers have been deployed for security and crowd management. Surveillance cameras, equipped with artificial intelligence, will ensure continuous monitoring.
Indian Railways has also made arrangements by adding nearly 100 trains and scheduling over 3,300 trips to transport the festival visitors. In addition to this, more than 15 lakh foreign tourists are expected to visit the Maha Kumbh. The Tourism Ministry has set up a tent city with facilities such as Ayurveda, Yoga, and Panchakarma to accommodate them.
The Maha Kumbh Mela is not only a spiritual event but also a major economic and cultural gathering, attracting people from all over the world to Prayagraj.
