On Thursday, the University Grants Commission (UGC) took a big step by banning three private universities in Rajasthan from offering PhD courses for the next five years. These universities—OPJS University (Churu), Sunrise University (Alwar), and Singhania University (Jhunjhunu)—were found to be violating academic rules and compromising the quality of their PhD programs.
The UGC’s decision came after a thorough review by a standing committee. The committee discovered that these universities had not followed the proper guidelines for offering PhD degrees, which are set by the UGC. The three universities were given a chance to explain their actions, but they didn’t provide convincing answers. As a result, the committee decided that these universities should not enroll new PhD students from the academic year 2025-26 until 2029-30.
The UGC has already informed these universities about its decision and has directed them to stop accepting PhD students immediately. The UGC also warned students and their families not to join any PhD programs offered by these universities. The degrees awarded by these universities will not be recognized or valid for higher education or jobs.
This move sends a strong message to universities across the country that maintaining high academic standards is essential, and any university that does not meet these standards will face strict action.
UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar said that universities should focus on keeping the highest standards in their PhD programs. He also mentioned that the UGC is reviewing the quality of PhD programs at other universities too. If any of them are found not following the rules, the UGC will take appropriate action.
Kumar emphasized the importance of holding universities accountable to protect the reputation and quality of higher education in India. He added that the UGC was in the process of checking the quality of PhD programs at 30 other universities across the country. The UGC randomly selects universities and asks them to provide detailed information about their PhD admissions and degrees.
In a previous discussion in Parliament, Union Education Minister Sukanta Majumdar had mentioned that the UGC had received complaints against 10 private universities, alleging that they were selling fake PhD degrees. Singhania University and OPJS University were part of this list.
The UGC’s action highlights the importance of following the rules and maintaining the integrity of the education system. It is also a reminder to students and parents to be careful when choosing universities for their higher education.
