Two More Cheetah Cubs Born at Kuno National Park, Total Now Reaches 26

In a major boost to India’s ambitious cheetah reintroduction project, two more cheetah cubs were born at Kuno National Park (KNP) in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district on Tuesday. The birth of these cubs marks a significant milestone for wildlife conservation in the country.

The proud mother, Veera, a five-year-old cheetah from South Africa, gave birth to the cubs, bringing the total number of cheetahs at Kuno to 26, including 14 cubs and 12 adults. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav took to social media platform X to share the joyful news, posting a picture of the newborn cubs.

"Kuno echoed again with the laughter of little cheetahs... Two cheetah cubs entered the 'Jungle Book' of Madhya Pradesh," Yadav wrote, expressing his excitement.
The Chief Minister praised the dedication and efforts of the park's officers, veterinarians, and field staff involved in the cheetah conservation project. "Thanks to their tireless work, Madhya Pradesh is now proudly known as the 'land of cheetahs,'" he said.

Yadav highlighted the positive impact the growing cheetah population is having on tourism in the state. "With the increasing number of cheetahs, tourism in Madhya Pradesh is getting a much-needed boost and opening new doors for employment. We are committed to conserving and protecting all wildlife, including cheetahs," he added.

Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav also shared a video of the day-old cubs on X, further spreading the delightful news.
On Wednesday, Mohan Yadav is scheduled to release more cheetahs from enclosures into the free-ranging forests of KNP. These cheetahs will join Vayu and Agni, a pair of male cheetahs from South Africa, who were released into the wild in December 2024.

Kuno National Park made history when it became the first home of African cheetahs in India after Prime Minister Narendra Modi reintroduced the species on September 17, 2022. The cheetahs were brought in as part of the world’s first intercontinental cheetah translocation project.

Initially, eight cheetahs from Namibia—five females and three males—were released into enclosures at the park. The species had been extinct in India for over 70 years due to excessive hunting and habitat destruction.

The recent birth of Veera’s cubs is a positive development for India’s cheetah conservation project, which aims to build a sustainable population of these majestic cats in the wild. In December 2024, Asha, a cheetah named by Prime Minister Modi, gave birth to three cubs.

However, not all attempts at reproduction have been successful. In November 2024, two cubs born to cheetah Neerva died shortly after birth. By January 2024, the park had reported the loss of ten cheetahs, including seven adults and three cubs.

Despite these challenges, the birth of Veera’s cubs provides fresh hope for the future of cheetahs in India and underscores the ongoing commitment to conserving this iconic species.
