Former US President Donald Trump has again questioned why the Biden government planned to give $21 million to India to help people vote. Speaking at a meeting in Miami on Thursday, he said this money might have been used to support a different leader in India.
"Why are we spending $21 million on voting in India? Maybe they wanted to help someone else win. This is a big surprise," Trump said.
His words came after the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by billionaire Elon Musk, said that USAID, a US agency, had planned to give this money to India.
DOGE, which was started by Trump to cut unnecessary spending, shared a list on February 16. This list showed that $21 million was planned for voter support in India. It also showed other planned spending, including $29 million for politics in Bangladesh and $39 million for different projects in Nepal. DOGE confirmed that all these plans had been canceled.
At the Miami event, Trump proudly spoke about stopping USAID from spending money in other countries.
"In the last month, we have stopped USAID from wasting money on such things," Trump said.
"DOGE has already saved over $55 billion in just one month, and we will save much more. We will grow our economy by making the government smaller," he added.
Earlier this week, Trump also spoke about cutting the India voting fund.
"Why are we giving India $21 million? They have enough money. They are one of the highest tax countries when dealing with us. It is very hard for us to trade there because their taxes are too high. I respect India and their Prime Minister, but why are we paying for their elections? We should focus on voting here," Trump said at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida.
After DOGE’s report, India’s ruling party, the BJP, strongly criticized the opposition party, Congress. The BJP said this funding was foreign involvement in India's elections.
"Who is this money helping? It is definitely not helping the ruling party," BJP leader Amit Malviya said.
He also said that foreign groups were trying to secretly control India’s government systems.
Malviya also blamed George Soros, a rich businessman from the US. Many right-wing leaders around the world have accused Soros of trying to influence elections through his foundation.
"Once again, George Soros, a known supporter of the Congress party and the Gandhi family, is involved in our elections," Malviya claimed.
He also talked about a 2012 agreement between the Election Commission of India and an international election organization connected to Soros.
The Indian government has not yet replied to these claims, but this issue has started a big debate about foreign groups in Indian elections.
