A fatal accident took place in Honolulu on Saturday when a 28-year-old man lost his life after jumping from the dangerous Spitting Cave cliffs. The man, Santiago Bourdieu, was a rugby player and a fitness trainer. He jumped around 6:07 PM, but he never came back to the surface.
As per reports, Mr. Bourdieu was underwater for nearly 15 minutes before the rescue teams arrived at the spot. The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) and Ocean Safety staff ran to the spot and started the search operation. An Instagram post uploaded a video where Mr. Bourdieu is seen running before jumping off the 50-foot rocky cliff. The post stated that his friends tried to rescue him but could not look underwater because they did not have masks.
After a long search operation, the rescue staff finally located him. They took his body onto a jet ski and brought him to the Moanalua boat ramp, where they performed CPR on him immediately. For some time, he seemed to be recovering, giving them hope, but he passed away at the hospital.
It is assumed by authorities that Mr. Bourdieu was a tourist. The men with him were speaking German, and because of that, it was difficult for the rescue staff to communicate.
San Isidro Club, where Mr. Bourdieu played rugby, uploaded a condolence message on social media. Their post stated, "We share great affection with all the family and friends of Santi at this moment. Santi was a player of the 96 generation and also helped as a fitness coach in our youth teams. He will be missed."
Spitting Cave is known to be very dangerous. Locals advise that cliff-jumping there is very hazardous, even for skilled swimmers. Strangers observe locals jumping and think that they can too, and more often than not, they suffer accidents.
Several people have lost their lives at this location over the years. Honolulu Ocean Safety officials have responded to 52 emergencies in the last five years because of cliff-jumping, from injuries to drownings to near-drownings, says the local media.
This unfortunate accident reminds us of the risks of cliff-jumping and the need to heed safety warnings.
