Suryakumar Yadav has come to terms with his exclusion from India’s squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy, which is set to begin on February 19. After reflecting on his recent ODI performances, he has accepted the decision, understanding the reason behind his non-selection.
When asked about not being included in the squad, Suryakumar admitted that his recent performances in ODIs, which have not been up to the mark, were the main reason for his exclusion. He said, “Why hurt? It’s about accepting it. If you see the squad, it’s looking good.” He added, “It hurts that I haven’t done well in ODIs. That’s why I’m not in the Champions Trophy squad. If I had done well, I would have been there.”
Suryakumar’s ODI stats have been underwhelming. With only 476 runs in 25 matches at a low average of 23.8, his performances have lacked consistency. He has scored just two half-centuries. His struggles were particularly visible in 2023 when he scored only 68 runs in eight ODIs, with an average under 10. His failures were most noticeable during the home series against Australia and New Zealand, where he couldn't convert good starts into big scores. A particularly low point was his three consecutive golden ducks against Australia in the home ODI series.
Despite the setback, Suryakumar is focused on the future and preparing for the five-match T20I series against England, which begins on January 22. He is especially excited for the series, which will be held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. He has fond memories of the stadium from his domestic cricket days, saying, “Eden Gardens is always special. It’s a special feeling, my franchise cricket started from here. I have played under Gautam Gambhir. The understanding is very good.”
Looking ahead, Suryakumar is ready for the tough challenge against England. “It’s always a good challenge against England, whether it’s T20 or anything else. Our batting order and bowling are similar, and we have discussed and planned about the team,” he shared.
After the T20I series, India will play a three-match ODI series against England from February 6, which will serve as a warm-up for the Champions Trophy.
Meanwhile, England has named their playing XI for the T20I series opener against India. Jos Buttler will lead the side, with Ben Duckett and Phil Salt opening the batting. Buttler will bat in the middle order, joined by Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, and Jacob Bethell. The pace attack will include Jamie Overton, Gus Atkinson, Jofra Archer, and Mark Wood, while Adil Rashid will be the sole spinner in the team.
England’s playing XI for the 1st T20I against India includes:
India’s squad for the T20I series against England consists of:
As both teams prepare for an exciting series, fans are eagerly anticipating the action-packed matches ahead.
