Mamata Banerjee Calls Maha Kumbh "Mrityu Kumbh" Amid Concerns

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spoke in the State Assembly on Tuesday and criticized the Uttar Pradesh government and the central government for mismanaging the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Mamata said the event had become a “Mrityu Kumbh,” which means “Death Kumbh.”

She started by showing respect for the Kumbh Mela and the Ganga River, but she pointed out that there were not enough arrangements for the people attending. Mamata mentioned that rich people could pay up to ₹1 lakh for special tents, but poor people did not have enough facilities. She asked what kind of planning had been done to keep the event safe and to avoid accidents like stampedes, which are common at such big events.

Her comments came after a stampede at the Kumbh Mela in which 30 people died, and many others got injured. Mamata Banerjee accused the Uttar Pradesh government of hiding some of the dead bodies to reduce the number of people who died. She said, “They have hidden hundreds of bodies to bring down the toll. The Maha Kumbh has turned into a ‘Mrityu Kumbh’ under BJP rule.”

Mamata said the stampede was heartbreaking and that better planning was needed for such big religious events to make sure people stay safe.

Apart from this, Mamata Banerjee responded to accusations made by the BJP. She challenged the party to prove that she had connections with Bangladeshi extremists, saying she would resign if they could prove it. She also said she would talk to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the BJP leaders who made these accusations.

Mamata also said that the BJP was using religion to get political benefits. She said that freedom of speech should not be used to spread hate and divide people.

Recently, Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in West Bengal, claimed that illegal activities were happening in some parts of Bengal. He accused Mamata Banerjee’s government of letting people from Bangladesh and other groups settle in the state. He said that this had changed the population in some areas, and he blamed Mamata for this.

On Tuesday, BJP lawmakers protested in the West Bengal Assembly, accusing Mamata Banerjee of favoring certain groups. Around 30 BJP members sat on the steps outside the Assembly hall, chanting slogans like “We don’t want a government that cannot stop the vandalism of Puja pandals.” The protest showed that the political tension between Mamata’s party and the BJP in Bengal is still strong.
