Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has blamed the central government for trying to make Punjab look bad. He is upset because a new flight with Indian people sent back from the United States is coming to Amritsar. He said that the BJP-led government is choosing Amritsar on purpose so that Punjab looks like the main place for illegal migration.
A flight with 119 Indians will land in Amritsar at around 10 PM today. Out of these, 67 are from Punjab, 33 from Haryana, 8 from Gujarat, 3 from Uttar Pradesh, 2 each from Goa, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, and 1 each from Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Last week, another flight from the US brought back 104 Indians, who were tied up with chains during the journey. This created a big argument in the country.
Bhagwant Mann asked why the Centre decided to land these flights in Amritsar. He said it is a plan to show Punjab in a bad light. He asked the Ministry of External Affairs to explain why only Amritsar is being chosen. He also said that when Prime Minister Narendra Modi met former US President Donald Trump, Indian citizens were being caught and made ready for deportation. He called this a shameful deal between the two countries.
Mann also said that the central government always treats Punjab unfairly. He believes the government does not miss any chance to spread negative stories about Punjab and its people.
The BJP has replied to these claims, saying that Bhagwant Mann is using this issue for political gain. BJP leader Praveen Khandelwal said that AAP leaders are not serious about the country’s security and only want to do politics. Another BJP leader, RP Singh, explained that Amritsar is simply the closest airport for flights coming from the US. He told Mann to stop making false claims and spreading wrong ideas.
Mann also blamed the media for only showing Punjabis in news reports and not talking about deportees from Gujarat and Haryana. He said it looks like the media is trying to prove that only Punjabis migrate illegally. He questioned why other big airports were not being used for these flights. He pointed out that if a plane carrying Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina could land in Uttar Pradesh, and Rafale fighter jets could land in Haryana, then why couldn’t a deportation flight land in Delhi or other cities?
Mann said that he has tried many times to talk to the Ministry of External Affairs, but they have not answered him. He said his concern is about the respect of young people from Punjab, not about politics. He said that if protecting their dignity is called politics, then he will continue to do it.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that all countries must take back their own citizens if they are caught living illegally in another country. He explained that the US has been sending back illegal migrants since 2012, and this is a regular process.
As the new deportation flight arrives, the debate between Punjab and the central government is getting stronger. The issue of illegal migration, India's relationship with the US, and the way Punjab is being shown in the media continue to be discussed across the country.
