Gyanesh Kumar has been chosen as the 26th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India. He is a 1988-batch IAS officer from Kerala. Kumar had been serving as an Election Commissioner since March 15, 2024. The Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Leader of the Opposition picked his name, and the President approved his appointment. He is the first person to be named CEC under the new law for choosing Election Commissioners.
Kumar's time as CEC will last until January 26, 2029. Before becoming CEC, he worked on important government matters. He played a key role in the law that changed Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. He was also part of the team that helped create the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Trust in 2020.
Kumar has a strong education background. He studied Civil Engineering at IIT Kanpur, Business Finance at ICFAI in India, and Environmental Economics at Harvard University.
Kumar worked in many important roles in the government. He worked in the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Home Affairs, where he helped with big issues, like the Jammu and Kashmir changes. He also worked in other key roles, including Secretary in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and the Ministry of Cooperation. He retired on January 31, 2024.
In the Kerala government, he worked in many places. He was Assistant Collector, Sub Collector, and held other roles, including working as the Managing Director of the Kerala State Cooperative Bank and the Director of Industries and Commerce. He was also the District Collector of Ernakulam and Secretary for the Goshree Islands Development Authority.
With this new role, Kumar will lead the Election Commission to make sure elections are free and fair. Along with him, the government has appointed IAS officer Vivek Joshi as Election Commissioner to help in this work.
