Delhi Station Stampede: 18 Dead, Families Search for Loved Ones

At least 18 people, including five children, were killed, and many others got hurt in a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night. The stampede happened because a lot of passengers were waiting to board trains to Prayagraj, where the Maha Kumbh Mela is taking place.

The stampede happened on the foot-overbridges connecting platforms 14 and 15. Some passengers slipped while going down, which caused panic and led to people pushing each other. This caused the deadly crush.

Some sources believe that train delays and too many people buying tickets may have made the situation worse. Others think that the wrong announcement about a platform change caused confusion, leading to the stampede.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has ordered an investigation to understand what went wrong. He has set up a team to find out why the stampede happened.

Deputy Commissioner of Police KPS Malhotra said that such incidents can be avoided if people don't rush. He also suggested that more trains should run when there are more passengers and that people should act calmly to avoid chaos.

One family from Bihar lost three members in the stampede. They had come to Delhi to attend the Maha Kumbh Mela and got caught in the panic. A relative, Pramod Kumar, said that the victims were his brother's in-laws and their daughter’s child.

After the stampede, the authorities increased security at Lucknow Railway Station in Uttar Pradesh because many people were still traveling to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela.

Victims’ belongings, such as shoes, clothes, and bags, were scattered across the station. Staff quickly collected them and helped clean up the area.

To avoid more accidents, Northern Railway decided that all special trains to Prayagraj will now run from platform 16 at New Delhi Railway Station. This will help reduce overcrowding on other platforms.

The Delhi Police shared the names of the 18 people who died. The victims were of different ages, including a 79-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy.

The Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, expressed sadness over the deaths and announced money for the families of those who died. Each family will receive Rs 2 lakh, and those who got hurt will get Rs 50,000.

The authorities have promised to take steps to make sure this doesn't happen again. They are asking people to stay calm and be careful while traveling, especially in large crowds. Stations are now focused on keeping passengers safe as many more people travel to the Maha Kumbh Mela.
