Sonia Gandhi's 'poor thing' remark on President sparks row, BJP demands apology

Congress MP Sonia Gandhi recently sparked controversy after commenting on the President’s speech at the start of the Budget session. While she did not speak to the media, she was heard sharing her thoughts with her son, Rahul Gandhi. She criticized the President's hour-long address, saying that President Droupadi Murmu seemed “very tired” by the end of the speech. Rahul Gandhi, in agreement, called the speech "boring," to which Sonia replied, “The President was getting very tired by the end... She could hardly speak, poor thing.” She also mentioned that the speech was repetitive.

Sonia’s remarks were not meant to be public, but the reporters around her caught them. She was heard saying “false promises,” which seemed to show her displeasure with the President’s message. Rahul Gandhi agreed, saying the speech was “boring.” Sonia Gandhi also added that Murmu had been repeating the same points during the speech.

Pappu Yadav, a Member of Parliament from Purnia, also shared his thoughts, calling the President a “rubber stamp” for the government. He said, "The President is like a stamp. She just has to read a love letter."

Kalyan Banerjee, a Trinamool Congress MP, added to the criticism by calling the President's speech “funny” and “depressing.” He also expressed frustration, saying that President Murmu did not address the situation in Manipur, nor did she visit the state.

The BJP quickly reacted, condemning the remarks as an insult to India’s first tribal woman President. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said that the comments showed the "low level of gutter politics" within the Congress party. He claimed that the Gandhi family could not accept someone from outside their circle holding a high constitutional position. Bhatia’s tweet stated, “This insult is an insult to every Indian, an insult to every tribal, and an insult to every woman.”

Union Minister JP Nadda demanded an apology from Congress, saying the remarks revealed the party’s "elitist, anti-poor, and anti-tribal" nature. He also said the words used by the Congress leaders were inappropriate. Another Union Minister, Kiren Rijiju, criticized the comments, saying they “demean” the office of the President.

In her speech, President Murmu highlighted the government's achievements, stressing that the pace of work had increased during the NDA’s third term. She mentioned topics like Waqf boards and the “One Nation, One Election” concept as examples of the government’s work. The President emphasized that the government was working with a "saturation approach," ensuring that no one is left behind in the journey of a "Vikshit Bharat" (Developed India).
