Shark Tank India judge Anupam Mittal recently shared a humorous reaction to a controversial statement by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Chairman SN Subrahmanyan. Subrahmanyan had questioned the need for employees to stay home on Sundays, asking how long someone could keep staring at their spouse. Responding on X (formerly Twitter), Anupam Mittal, the founder of Shaadi.com, wrote, “But sir if husband and wife don’t look at each other, how will we remain the most populous country in the world .” His witty remark sparked a wave of mixed reactions online.
Some users found his comment entertaining, with one person saying, “Hahahahaha, that was a good one. Love it.” Others were critical, with one user commenting, “Sir, your humor and Shark Tank’s TRP are declining every day.” Another noted, “Expected such a reply from you.”
The original remark by SN Subrahmanyan, which suggested employees should work on Sundays and questioned the value of staying home, faced significant backlash. He said, “How long can you stare at your wife?” This statement was seen as dismissive of mental health and rest, leading to widespread criticism.
Actor Deepika Padukone voiced her displeasure on Instagram, calling the comments “shocking” and adding, “Shocking to see people in such senior positions make such statements.” She also used the hashtag #MentalHealthMatters to emphasize the importance of well-being. After L&T issued a clarification, Deepika responded again, sharing the company’s statement and remarking, “And they just made it worse.”
Former badminton player Jwala Gutta also criticized the remark, questioning why someone wouldn’t want to spend time with their spouse. She wrote on X, “Why shouldn’t he stare at his wife? And why only on Sundays? It’s sad and unbelievable that educated people in high positions make such statements. They ignore the importance of mental health and expose their outdated thinking so openly. It’s disappointing and scary!”
Adding a touch of humor to the situation, businessman Anand Mahindra said in an interview, “My wife is wonderful, and I love staring at her.” Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute, joined in, saying, “Yes, even my wife Natasha Poonawalla thinks I am wonderful and loves staring at me on Sundays.”
The controversy has sparked a broader conversation about work-life balance and the importance of mental health. Subrahmanyan’s comments have drawn attention to the responsibilities of leaders in fostering a culture that values rest and personal well-being.
