Sanya Malhotra: Society expects women to leave jobs after childbirth

Actor Sanya Malhotra, who will soon be seen playing the role of an Indian housewife in her upcoming film Mrs., shared her thoughts on the unequal treatment of men and women in society. Mrs. is set to release on February 7 on the Zee5 OTT platform and is directed by Arati Kadav. The movie tells the story of a talented dancer whose life changes dramatically after she marries into a male-dominated household.

In a recent interview, Sanya discussed how society pressures women to leave their jobs after having children. She spoke about the unfair expectations placed on women, saying, "There are many expectations from us women. It is very common nowadays that a woman should leave her job after giving birth to a child. But the child belongs to both parents, right? It’s the responsibility of both partners. What we need is a good balance. While our characters in the film might not achieve this balance, there are many real-life examples that people should learn from."

Arati Kadav, the director of Mrs., also expressed her thoughts on this issue. She shared, "Women shouldn't have to choose between their career and family. Marriage is supposed to be an institution where both partners can pursue their dreams and careers. Why is it that after marriage, women are expected to give up their passions and ambitions, while men continue to grow in their careers with the support of women? If a man marries a good woman, his life flourishes. First, the mother takes care of him, and then his wife should. Why should it be this way?"

Sanya, known for her versatile roles in films like Jawan, Dangal, Kathal, and Pagglait, spoke about how she enjoys trying new things and taking on different challenges. She explained, "I don't like to limit myself. I’ve always taken bold steps. I love learning new things. In my personal life, I am relaxed, but when it comes to films, I want to try everything."

Looking ahead, Sanya hinted at her upcoming projects. She revealed, "This year, you’ll see me in a variety of roles. In Sunny Sanskarai, I’m playing a role I’ve never done before. I enjoy challenging myself and believe it’s important to keep pushing yourself."

Sanya also shared how she prepared for her role in Mrs. while working on other projects like Jawan and Sam Bahadur. She said, "While working on Jawan and Sam Bahadur, I would prepare for Mrs. in between shoots. After I finished shooting for Sam Bahadur, I’d have calls with Arati to discuss my character."

Sanya’s Bollywood career began with the film Dangal, which starred Aamir Khan and Fatima Sana Shaikh. Since then, she has built a strong reputation for taking on diverse roles in various genres.
