Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama” holds a special place in the hearts of many. For those who grew up watching it on Doordarshan or YouTube, the animated classic has always been a beloved retelling of the Ramayana. Whether in its Hindi version or English dub, it captured the simplicity and depth of the epic. With its re-release in cinemas, one might wonder why a film like this is needed on the big screen after so many years.
While nostalgia is a strong enough reason, there’s more to this film than just reliving memories. Watching Yugo Sako’s iconic animation remastered in 4K on a large screen is an experience that truly makes the trip to the theatre worthwhile. Though the new dubbing introduces fresh voices, it does not detract from the charm of what many consider the best adaptation of the Ramayana.
The story of this film focuses on the part of the Ramayana that covers Lord Rama’s exile, the abduction of Sita, and the epic battle of Sugreeva’s avatar sena against Ravana’s demon army. It’s a tale that most Indians know by heart. However, the film manages to bring it to life by blending the timeless simplicity of the narrative with animation that has aged remarkably well. Even after 33 years, the animation feels fresh and vibrant, enhanced further by digital remastering for the big screen. Watching the vivid visuals again feels like a return to something truly special, especially for those who were disappointed by films like “Adipurush.” This adaptation manages to heal those wounds by staying true to the soul of the epic.
The new dubbing in this release might catch longtime fans off guard. For those who grew up listening to Amrish Puri’s commanding voice as Ravana, Arun Govil’s gentle tone as Lord Rama, or Shatrughan Sinha’s impactful narration, the change is initially jarring. However, the updated dubbing feels more dramatic and cinematic, suiting today’s audience without losing the heart of the story. It’s different but still fits well with the timeless visuals, complementing the narrative rather than competing with it.
Another change comes in the music. Instead of the familiar Hindi versions of songs like “Janani Main Raamdoot Hanuman” and “Vaanar Sena,” the film now features their Sanskrit versions. While this may feel unfamiliar to fans of the original, Vanraj Bhatia’s enchanting music continues to resonate deeply. For those new to the film, these changes likely won’t matter much as the songs fit seamlessly into the storytelling.
That being said, the film isn’t without its flaws. Its portrayal of Ravana is one-dimensional, reducing him to a purely evil asura and glossing over his wisdom and complexity. Additionally, the film avoids certain critical moments, such as Sita’s agni-pariksha, which could have added depth to the narrative. While these omissions keep the story simple and accessible, they also take away some of the nuances that many retellings of the Ramayana explore.
One minor complaint is the inclusion of an interval in the theatrical release. At under two hours, the film could have easily run without a break, as the pause disrupts the flow of the story.
Despite these issues, “Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama” remains a timeless masterpiece. Its return to cinemas after 33 years offers both longtime fans and new viewers a chance to experience Yugo Sako’s extraordinary vision on the big screen. Whether it’s a nostalgic revisit or a first-time viewing, this film is a must-watch for anyone who loves the Ramayana and the magic of animation.
