Gurmeet Ram Rahim, a rape convict and the self-styled godman, has been released on a 20-day parole, according to sources. The Dera Sacha Sauda chief was quietly taken out of Haryana’s Sunaria Jail early at 5:26 am.
Reports suggest that during this parole period, he is likely to stay at the Dera Ashram in Sirsa, Haryana. This marks the 12th time Ram Rahim has been released on parole since he was imprisoned in 2017.
Ram Rahim was convicted in 2017 for raping two of his women followers and sentenced to 20 years in jail. He has been serving his sentence at Sunaria Jail in Haryana’s Rohtak district.
The Dera chief's criminal record extends beyond sexual assault. In 2019, he, along with three others, was convicted for the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatarpati, who had exposed wrongdoings at the sect. The journalist was shot dead over 16 years ago.
Another major case against Ram Rahim was linked to the murder of Ranjit Singh, a former manager of the Dera. Singh was killed in Khanpur Colony, Kurukshetra, Haryana, on July 10, 2002. It was alleged that Ranjit Singh was involved in circulating a letter that revealed instances of sexual abuse within the sect.
In 2021, a special CBI court found Ram Rahim and four others guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The court also imposed heavy fines, including Rs 31 lakh on Ram Rahim. However, in May 2024, the high court overturned their conviction, stating that the investigation in the case was flawed and inconsistent.
This release follows Ram Rahim’s previous 20-day parole granted on October 2, 2024. During that period, strict conditions were imposed, barring him from participating in election-related events, making public speeches, or staying within the state.
The frequent paroles of Ram Rahim continue to raise questions and concerns among many, given his involvement in high-profile crimes.
