The Election Commission of India (ECI) has asked the Haryana government to respond by Tuesday noon, January 28, about claims that ammonia levels in the water coming from Haryana to Delhi have increased. The ammonia has reportedly caused water shortages in Delhi.
This action follows a complaint from Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who have accused the BJP-led Haryana government of intentionally polluting the Yamuna River to affect the upcoming Delhi elections. They claim that the high ammonia levels in the water have made it unsafe for treatment in Delhi’s water plants.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has strongly criticized the Haryana government. He accused them of deliberately contaminating the water by mixing "poison" into it. Kejriwal said, “There is no greater wrong than denying people water. The BJP is trying to leave the people of Delhi without water for their dirty politics. They are putting poison in the water, making it so toxic that Delhi’s water treatment plants can’t clean it. The BJP wants to harm the people of Delhi. We won’t let this happen.”
Atishi, the Delhi Chief Minister, warned that the contaminated water might cause a shortage for around 30% of Delhi’s residents. She said that three major water treatment plants in Delhi—Wazirabad, Chandrawal, and Okhla—are at risk of shutting down due to the ammonia in the Yamuna water.
Atishi also mentioned that Haryana’s actions seem to be politically motivated, aiming to affect the Delhi elections. The Delhi elections are set for February 5, and the AAP is hoping for a third consecutive win, despite facing corruption allegations.
In response, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini denied the claims and called them "baseless." He said, “The pollution of the Yamuna River is a problem caused by Delhi. I’ve spoken to people in Haryana who have to drink polluted water because Delhi’s untreated waste flows into the river before it even reaches Haryana.” He also blamed the AAP government in Delhi for failing to clean up the river.
Haryana’s Health Minister, Anil Vij, also reacted to the accusations. He said, “Kejriwal is a factory of lies. If you check the water quality at the point where it enters Delhi and compare it with Delhi’s water quality, the difference will be clear. Cleaning the Yamuna River in Delhi was Kejriwal’s responsibility, but he failed to do it.”
The Delhi elections, scheduled for February 5, will feature a tough competition between the AAP, the BJP, and the Congress. The AAP, which is currently in power, will be looking to win again, despite facing criticism over corruption issues.
