Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the French city of Marseille on Tuesday and spoke about its deep connection to India’s struggle for independence. He remembered how freedom fighter Veer Savarkar made a brave attempt to escape British custody in this city. He also expressed his gratitude to the French activists who stood by Savarkar during that difficult time.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is set to inaugurate a new Indian Consulate in Marseille along with French President Emmanuel Macron. The two leaders have a packed schedule for Wednesday, including a visit to the Mazargues War Cemetery, where they will pay their respects to Indian soldiers who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars.
On social media, Modi shared his thoughts about Marseille’s role in India's history. In a post, he wrote that the city has great importance in India's freedom struggle because it was here that Veer Savarkar made a daring escape. He also thanked the people of Marseille and the French activists of that time for opposing Savarkar’s return to British custody. Modi called Savarkar’s courage an inspiration for generations to come.
In another post, he shared that he and President Macron had arrived in Marseille and that their visit would strengthen the relationship between India and France. He also mentioned that the new Indian Consulate would help connect people from both countries more closely. Along with this, he spoke about his plan to honor the sacrifices of Indian soldiers who fought in the World Wars.
Marseille has a special place in India's freedom movement because of the daring actions of Veer Savarkar. In 1910, Savarkar was arrested in London in connection with the Nasik Conspiracy Case. While being taken to India by ship for trial, he saw an opportunity near Marseille. Off the coast of the city, he jumped into the sea and swam toward the French shore, even as gunfire came from the British ship. Unfortunately, he was captured in Marseille by the British police. The French government objected to his arrest on their land and took the matter to the Hague International Court. This incident made Savarkar and other Indian freedom fighters more well-known around the world.
Before their official events in Marseille, Modi and Macron reached the city on Tuesday. They have several engagements lined up, including a visit to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project. This project is an important global initiative focused on nuclear fusion research. On Wednesday, Modi will also visit the Mazargues War Cemetery to honor the Indian soldiers who gave their lives in the World Wars.
Earlier, while in Paris, Modi addressed the India-France CEO Forum. He spoke about the importance of this platform in strengthening business ties and encouraging new ideas. He expressed happiness that business leaders from both countries are working together to create opportunities in key industries. He explained that this kind of collaboration not only increases investment and economic growth but also ensures a better future for the coming generations.
Modi described the forum as more than just a business meeting. He called it a platform where some of the brightest minds from India and France come together. He praised the business leaders for focusing on innovation and teamwork and for strengthening the strategic relationship between the two nations. He highlighted that India and France share not just democratic values but also deep trust, a commitment to innovation, and a sense of responsibility toward people. He added that their relationship is not limited to just their own countries but extends to finding solutions for global challenges.
Additionally, Modi co-chaired the AI Action Summit in Paris along with President Macron. The event brought together world leaders, policymakers, and industry experts to discuss the future of artificial intelligence. The summit lasted a week and concluded with a high-level session where important discussions took place on the role of AI in shaping the world.
