Pilot Collapses Mid-Flight, Forcing Emergency Diversion to Athens

On Saturday evening, an EasyJet flight traveling from Hurghada, Egypt, to Manchester, England, had to make an emergency landing in Athens, Greece, after the pilot became seriously unwell during the flight.

About two hours after takeoff, chaos broke out when the pilot collapsed unexpectedly. The cabin crew hurried toward the front of the aircraft, startling passengers who quickly realized something was wrong. "At first, we thought it was just a passenger who needed help," one traveler told the Manchester Evening News. "Sudden screams were asking if anyone on board was medically trained. Some passengers got up to assist the crew."

To keep the situation discreet, the cabin crew pulled a curtain across the front section of the plane, blocking the passengers’ view of the medical emergency.
Later, the cabin crew informed passengers that the captain had fallen ill and required immediate medical attention. “We were told that they would give us updates about what would happen next,” shared one concerned passenger.

As the tension grew in the cabin, an announcement was made that the flight would be diverted to Athens for an emergency landing. Anxiety levels rose among passengers, with one traveler even suffering a panic attack due to the turbulence during the landing. The remaining pilot, however, managed to bring the plane safely to the ground.

Upon landing, paramedics quickly boarded the aircraft to provide urgent medical care to the captain. EasyJet issued a statement confirming the situation: "Flight EZY2252 from Hurghada to Manchester was diverted to Athens due to the captain requiring medical assistance. The First Officer carried out a routine landing, and paramedics were present upon arrival."

The airline also explained that passengers were forced to stay overnight in Athens due to the unexpected delay. EasyJet arranged hotel accommodations and meals for the stranded travelers and ensured they resumed their journey to Manchester the following day.

“We apologize to passengers for the inconvenience caused and thank them for their patience and understanding. Our team did everything possible to reduce the impact of this delay," the statement concluded.

Despite the frightening incident, passengers were grateful for the professionalism of the cabin crew and the swift actions taken to ensure their safety.
