Overnight rainfall in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) brought some relief to the city's air quality, but it also led to a rise in temperatures. Thankfully, there have been no reports of flooding or water logging in the area so far.
However, the air quality in Delhi has worsened. On Thursday, the air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 356, which falls in the "very poor" category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
On Wednesday, the Commission for Air Quality Management decided to bring back stricter pollution controls under GRAP-3 and GRAP-4 in Delhi and surrounding areas, including NCR. These rules are designed to tackle the growing pollution in the region.
According to an official order, Delhi's AQI was 275 on January 14, but it quickly started rising on January 15, reaching 386. This increase was due to thick fog, low temperatures, and unfavorable conditions that made it harder for pollutants to disperse into the air. The pollution level continued to rise, and by 5:00 PM, the AQI had reached 393, and by 6:00 PM, it was 396. Experts believe the AQI could soon cross 400, based on predictions by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM).
As the pollution worsened, the Directorate of Education, Delhi government, issued an order for schools to hold classes in hybrid mode for students up to Class IX and XI. This means some students will attend classes online while others will attend in person, to reduce exposure to the harmful air quality.
Additionally, Delhi is experiencing cold waves, which are contributing to the rise in air pollution. These weather conditions make it difficult for pollutants to clear out of the atmosphere, leading to poor air quality and health risks.
