Nikhil Kamath's Brother's Top Takeaway From Bryan Johnson Podcast

Zerodha co-founder Nithin Kamath recently shared an important lesson he learned from his brother, Nikhil Kamath’s podcast with Bryan Johnson, a tech millionaire known for his research on anti-aging. Nithin revealed that he had always believed that Delhi was the only city in India with serious air quality problems. However, his conversation with Bryan Johnson helped him change this perspective.

Bryan Johnson, who is deeply involved in research about anti-aging, walked out of Nikhil Kamath's 'WTF' podcast midway, saying that the air quality in the room was poor. Despite the presence of an air purifier, Bryan couldn't tolerate the air, and this led Nithin Kamath to reflect on the state of air quality in India.

Nithin shared this realization on Instagram. He wrote about how he had always thought that air pollution was mostly an issue in Delhi and that it was only a winter problem. However, when they recorded the podcast in Bandra, Mumbai, in a sea-facing apartment, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was more than 160, which was higher than what Nithin expected. He realized that if Bandra had such poor air quality, the air quality in more crowded areas of the city must be even worse.

Later, Nithin checked the AQI from his office in Bengaluru, which is in a quieter part of the city. To his surprise, the AQI was over 120. He was shocked to think about how much worse the air quality could be in busier parts of Bengaluru, especially with the dust from ongoing construction and poor roads. This experience made him compare the air quality in India to that in cities of the US and Europe, where most cities have an AQI below 50.

Nithin went on to explain how long-term exposure to poor air quality can lead to serious health problems like lung damage, heart issues, a weakened immune system, and even cancer. He shared his concerns about the air quality in cities like Delhi, where the AQI can reach as high as 500 in winter and above 200 in summer. Nithin felt that air pollution had become such a normal part of life in India that people hardly notice it anymore, even though the harmful effects of polluted air are well known.

In his Instagram post, Nithin also suggested an interesting idea: linking property prices to the air quality in different areas. He said that in areas with poor air quality, real estate prices should be lower because living there means taking on higher risks of health problems, including respiratory diseases and cancer.

On the other hand, Bryan Johnson, who had to leave the podcast midway, explained his experience in India. Despite wearing an N95 mask and turning on the air purifier, he couldn’t stay in the hotel room because of the air quality. The AQI at the time was around 120, and Bryan felt that the air purifier was ineffective since the room was circulating outside air. He also praised Nikhil Kamath for being a gracious host but pointed out how the air pollution in India had deeply affected him.

Bryan Johnson mentioned in a post that it was his third day in India, and by then, the air pollution had already caused his skin to break out in a rash and made his eyes and throat burn. He was shocked at how normal air pollution seemed to be in India, with people carrying on their daily activities without much concern. He was especially surprised to see that many people were outside running and children were being exposed to poor air from birth. He also noticed that very few people wore masks, which could reduce exposure to pollution.

Bryan further questioned why air pollution in India wasn’t treated as a national emergency, considering the well-known health risks. He compared this situation to how obesity in the US is a silent crisis. He pointed out that while pollution is a major issue in India, obesity is a bigger concern in the US, with 42.4% of Americans being obese. He said that he hadn’t realized how serious the obesity problem was until he returned to the US, much like how he had become used to the pollution in India. He also asked why American leaders had not declared a national emergency on obesity, just as he felt India should do with air pollution.

Both Nithin Kamath and Bryan Johnson shared their thoughts about the importance of addressing air pollution seriously. Their discussions highlight the need for more awareness and action, not just in India but around the world, to protect people’s health and well-being from the dangers of poor air quality.
