In a bid to calm the fears of people in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, health experts held a press conference in Budhal village on Saturday, following the tragic deaths of 16 people over a month. The experts confirmed that the deaths were caused by neurotoxins, substances that damage the brain.
The press conference was led by Dr. AS Bhatia, the principal of Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri, and Javed Iqbal Chowdhary, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Budhal. Also present were Dr. Manohar Lal Rana, the chief medical officer of Rajouri, Dr. Shamim Ahmed, the Medical Superintendent, and Dr. Zaeem Khan, the head of Chest and TB at GMC Rajouri.
Dr. Bhatia explained that all the victims shared a similar medical condition—brain swelling, also known as edema. He assured the public that the health department was actively working to provide treatment to those who were affected and monitoring the situation closely.
While the cause of the deaths is still under investigation, Dr. Bhatia stressed that the neurotoxins found in the samples collected from the village were responsible for causing serious brain damage. He added, “Once a patient shows signs of severe brain damage, it is difficult to reverse the condition.”
Experts have been testing the samples at leading laboratories, including the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the National Institute of Virology in Pune. Their results ruled out any viruses or bacteria, confirming that the cause was not an infectious disease. However, the tests confirmed the presence of neurotoxins in the samples, which led the doctors to conclude that toxins were to blame.
Interestingly, all the victims came from three different families, which has led some people to believe that something suspicious might be behind the deaths. This has prompted the government to take further action, and an investigation has been ordered by the Rajouri Police. To solve the mystery, the police have set up a special investigation team (SIT) to look into the case.
While the investigation continues, the health department assured that it would continue to provide support to the community and work hard to understand the cause of the deaths to prevent more tragedies in the future.
