Mumbai to Get Giant Ferris Wheel Inspired by London's Iconic Eye

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) presented its biggest-ever budget of over Rs 74,000 crore for the financial year 2025-26. According to BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, this is the largest budget the city has seen so far. One of the most exciting proposals in this year’s budget is the plan to build a giant Ferris wheel, which will be inspired by the famous London Eye.

The new Ferris wheel, named "Mumbai Eye," will stand at 135 meters, similar to the London Eye, and will be located along the banks of the River Thames. The BMC has shared that the project will be built under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, although no budget has been set for the project yet. Also, the exact location of the Mumbai Eye is still undecided, but it is expected to occupy two to three acres of land.

Once completed, the Mumbai Eye will offer stunning views of the city and provide a bird's-eye view of the financial capital. The Ferris wheel will feature air-conditioned passenger capsules that will be sealed for comfort.

The idea for the Mumbai Eye was first proposed in 2008 by Shiv Sena leader Ravindra Waikar. In 2022, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) suggested constructing the Mumbai Eye at Bandra Reclamation promenade. However, the plan faced opposition from local residents and was put on hold.

The BMC's budget is described as "citizen-centric," with a focus on the future of Mumbai. Commissioner Gagrani emphasized that the budget reflects the BMC's commitment to providing better services and amenities to citizens at the lowest possible cost. The budget has six main goals: maintaining fiscal discipline, improving infrastructure, offering a high-quality education system, ensuring a clean and sustainable environment, focusing on social initiatives, and improving governance and administration.

The budget, totaling Rs 74,427.41 crore, aims to shape a more innovative and inclusive Mumbai, ensuring that it continues to grow and thrive in the coming years.
