Megyn Kelly recently criticized actress and singer Selena Gomez for posting a tearful Instagram video about mass deportations in the United States. The video, which has since been deleted, featured Gomez speaking emotionally about recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and their impact on families.
During an episode of The Megyn Kelly Show, Kelly described Gomez as "unwell" for sharing the emotional post. "She’s unwell. This is an unwell person," Kelly said. "Anybody who takes their phone works up in tears, and posts a video of themselves crying into their phone is sick. That’s a sick person."
The video was Gomez's response to reports of 954 ICE raids across the country. In it, she apologized repeatedly and expressed her heartbreak over the situation. “All my people are getting attacked, the children. I don’t understand,” Gomez said tearfully. “I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”
The post included a Mexican flag emoji and sparked a mix of reactions. While many fans praised Gomez for showing empathy, others criticized her stance.
Following the backlash, Gomez shared a message on Instagram stories, saying, "Apparently it’s not OK to show empathy for people." Despite this follow-up, the actress eventually deleted the original post.
Kelly expressed disbelief at Gomez’s decision to make such a display public. "Tears happen. They tend to happen privately," Kelly said on her podcast. "If they happen publicly, I think you should quickly move on and recover. I don’t understand the person who works it and tries to squeeze out more tears to make themselves look extra sad."
Kelly also claimed that Gomez was taken aback by the negative reactions. “She deleted it after her fans taught her that the majority of the country stands behind these policies,” Kelly said. "I’m sure she was shocked to get any blowback whatsoever."
Gomez’s representatives have not yet commented on the incident, but the controversy has fueled discussions about immigration and public figures expressing emotional opinions online.
