A 46-year-old man was slashed multiple times in a random attack on a Manhattan subway on Tuesday, January 28, early in the morning. The victim was on a southbound No. 2 train near West 96th Street and Broadway, around 4:30 a.m. when Angel Alvarado, 54, approached him. Alvarado allegedly pulled out a knife and began attacking the man without warning.
Alvarado, who lives in Harlem, was arrested by the police at the scene. He faces serious charges, including first- and second-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon. Authorities found the knife at the scene.
This isn't the first time Alvarado has been in trouble with the law. In 2019, he was arrested for criminal mischief. He was also arrested for petit larceny in 2016 and had a history of being involved in robberies back in 1992. His first arrest was for grand larceny in 1989.
This attack is part of a worrying trend of rising crime in the subway system. Just the day before, on January 27, another violent incident took place. A man with a criminal record, Markeese Brazelis, 26, was arrested for allegedly throwing a woman onto the tracks of an incoming subway train. Brazelis had previous arrests for sex abuse and trespassing. MTA’s chief security officer, Michael Kemper, expressed his anger over these repeated attacks, saying it was hard to understand why these criminals keep getting released. "When will the courthouses get the message?" he asked. "This can’t continue."
In response to the increasing attacks, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has promised to improve subway safety. She recently said she would work with New York City Mayor Eric Adams to put more police officers on every overnight subway train for the next six months. "I want to see uniformed police on the platforms, but more importantly, we will put an officer on every single train, overnight — from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. — over the next six months," she said. The state will financially support this initiative.
