The first meeting of the new Delhi Assembly started on Monday. During this session, all the newly elected MLAs took an oath in six different languages: Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Urdu, Maithili, and Punjabi. This showed the different languages spoken by people in the Assembly.
The session was also important because it marked the return of the BJP to power after 26 years. The BJP members sat to the right of the Speaker’s chair, which was a change in seating.
Arvinder Singh Lovely, a senior BJP member, was sworn in as the pro-tem Speaker. He was given the oath by the Lieutenant Governor, Vinai Kumar Saxena, at the Raj Niwas before the meeting began. As the senior-most member, Lovely helped all the new MLAs take their oaths.
The first person to take the oath was Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, followed by her six Cabinet ministers. The ministers included Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, who is the Minister for Public Works, and Ashish Sood, the Home Minister. Some ministers, like Manjinder Singh Sirsa, took their oath in Punjabi, and Kapil Mishra took his in Sanskrit.
Other MLAs also took their oaths in different languages. Karnail Singh took his in Punjabi, and Pradyumn Rajput and Neelam Pahalwan took theirs in Sanskrit. BJP's Tarvinder Marwah read out the oath and then chanted religious slogans, which the Speaker reminded him was not allowed in the Assembly.
Other MLAs such as Amanatullah Khan, Chandan Chaudhary, Ajay Dutt, and Gajendra Yadav took their oaths in Urdu, Maithili, English, and Sanskrit. The Speaker reminded everyone to follow the official format for taking the oath.
Some MLAs like Sanjay Goel, Jitendra Mahajan, and Ajay Mahawar took their oaths in Sanskrit. Chaudhary Zubair and Amanatullah Khan chose Urdu. Atishi, who is the Leader of the Opposition and represents Kalkaji, also took her oath.
Gopal Rai, who had trouble walking, took the oath from his seat with help from Atishi. Mohan Singh Bisht was the last one to be sworn in. Anil Jha took his oath in Maithili.
Later, the Assembly will hold elections to choose the new Speaker. BJP MLA Vijender Gupta is likely to become the new Speaker.
The BJP won the elections on February 5, winning 48 out of 70 seats. This ended the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) rule, which had been in power for ten years. AAP won 22 seats in this election.
