A man from Himachal Pradesh was shocked when he received an electricity bill for a whopping ₹210 crore. The bill showed the amount as ₹2,10,42,08,405, which is over ₹210 crore! This surprising event took place in the Hamirpur Zone of the state.
The man, Lalit Dhiman, runs a small concrete business. When he saw the huge bill, he was understandably shocked and immediately went to the electricity department’s office. The department officials were just as surprised when they saw the bill. They decided to investigate the issue.
Upon checking, they found out that the enormous bill was a result of a technical glitch. The mistake was traced back to an incorrect meter reading that had been entered into the system. As soon as the error was discovered, the bill was corrected to the actual amount of ₹4,047, a big difference from the initial ₹210 crore.
The power department officer, Ashish Kapoor, explained that the issue happened because of a software malfunction. He added that the concerned officials, including the Sub Divisional Officer (SDO), had been summoned to check the records and take the necessary actions if any lapses were found.
In a related development, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu made a statement about electricity subsidies in the state. Earlier this month, he voluntarily gave up the subsidy on all five electricity connections registered under his name. The Chief Minister also encouraged wealthy citizens with multiple electricity connections to give up their subsidies to help the state’s development.
Sukhvinder Sukhu said that the government spends ₹2,200 crore each year on electricity subsidies and ₹200 crore every month on salaries and pensions for electricity board employees. He suggested that subsidies should be reserved for the people who truly need them and that wealthier citizens should contribute to building a fairer society.
Sukhu also emphasized the state government’s goal to make Himachal Pradesh self-reliant by reforming the system, which would gradually help improve the state’s economy.
