Chamari Athapaththu to exit WPL early for Sri Lanka's New Zealand tour

UP Warriorz have not started well in the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025, and now they will face another problem. Their experienced all-rounder, Chamari Athapaththu, will leave the team in the middle of the tournament. She has been chosen to play for Sri Lanka in a cricket series against New Zealand in early March.

Athapaththu did not play in Warriorz’s first match against Gujarat Giants, but she was expected to be an important player for the team. Now, she will have to leave after playing five matches. She will be available for selection until the match against Mumbai Indians on February 26. After that, she will travel to join the Sri Lanka team. Warriorz will also play three home matches in Lucknow, but Athapaththu will not be there for those games.

Meanwhile, New Zealand player Amelia Kerr, who is playing for Mumbai Indians, will stay in the WPL until the end. The WPL final will be played on March 15, while Sri Lanka’s matches in New Zealand will happen between March 4 and March 18.

Warriorz are already missing their main captain, Alyssa Healy. In their first match, they played with four foreign players—Tahlia McGrath, Grace Harris, Alana King, and Sophie Ecclestone. But even with these players, they lost against Gujarat Giants. Their next match is against Delhi Capitals, who have reached the final twice. Warriorz will try to make a strong comeback.

Chamari Athapaththu (Captain), Harshitha Samarawickrama, Vishmi Gunaratne, Nilakshika Silva, Kavisha Dilhari, Anushka Sanjeewani, Manudi Nanayakkara, Imesha Dulani, Achini Kulasuriya, Udeshika Prabodhani, Sachini Nisansala, Kaushini Nuthyangana, Inoshi Priyadarshini, Sugandika Kumari, Rashmika Sewwandi, Chethana Vimukthi.

Warriorz now have to make new plans as they will not have Athapaththu for the last part of the WPL 2025. They will need to find the right balance in the team to stay strong in the tournament.
