Bengaluru man wins case against PVR-INOX for 25-minute ad delay

A man from Bengaluru, Abhishek MR, won ₹65,000 after he took legal action against PVR Cinemas, INOX, and BookMyShow. He said that the theaters wasted his time by playing long ads before the movie. He booked three tickets for *Sam Bahadur* for a 4:05 PM show in 2023. He expected the movie to end by 6:30 PM so he could go back to work. But the movie started only at 4:30 PM after nearly 30 minutes of ads and trailers.

Abhishek complained that the delay spoiled his plans and made him miss important work. He said the theaters gave the wrong show timings to make extra money by showing ads. He called it unfair and said his time was wasted. The consumer court agreed with him and said that time is precious, and no one should waste another person's time for profit.

The court ordered PVR Cinemas and INOX to pay Abhishek ₹50,000 for wasting his time, ₹5,000 for causing stress, and ₹10,000 for his complaint expenses. The court also fined PVR Cinemas and INOX ₹1 lakh and told them to deposit the money in the Consumer Welfare Fund within 30 days.

BookMyShow was also named in the case, but the court said it was not responsible since it only sells tickets and has no control over ads in cinemas. PVR Cinemas and INOX defended themselves by saying that they are required by law to show public service messages. But the court said such messages should not be more than 10 minutes and should only be played before the movie starts or during the interval.

The court added that making people sit through 25-30 minutes of ads is unfair, especially for busy people. The case is important for moviegoers who feel that too many ads before movies waste their time.
