Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is celebrated every year on February 19 to honor the birth of one of India's most courageous and visionary rulers. Shivaji Maharaj founded the Maratha Empire and became known for his intelligence, military skills, and leadership. He fought bravely against the Mughal rulers and expanded his kingdom with careful planning and strategy. In 1674, he was officially crowned as Chhatrapati, which means emperor. His life and teachings continue to inspire people, especially in Maharashtra, where his birth anniversary is observed with great respect and enthusiasm. The year 2025 marks the 395th birth anniversary of the great Maratha warrior.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is unique because it is celebrated on two different dates. According to the Hindu calendar, his birth falls on the 3rd day of the Phalgun month, while in the modern calendar, it is observed on February 19. This difference has led to some people celebrating his Jayanti as per the traditional calendar, while others follow the fixed date in February.
Shivaji Maharaj is remembered as the greatest ruler of the Maratha Empire. At a time when Hindu traditions were fading under foreign rule, he worked hard to preserve them. He introduced the use of Marathi and Sanskrit in his court and administration, instead of Persian, which was the official language used by most other rulers. His ability to plan and execute strategies helped him win many battles against much larger Mughal armies. He is especially known for using guerrilla warfare, where he would launch sudden attacks and quickly retreat into the mountains. This earned him the title of "Mountain Rat" among his enemies.
Shivaji was deeply influenced by his mother, Jijabai, who was a brave and religious woman. She often told him stories of great Hindu kings and warriors, which inspired him to become a strong and just leader. Many people believe that he was named after Lord Shiva, but in reality, he was named after the regional goddess Shivai.
One of Shivaji’s greatest strengths was his ability to balance war and diplomacy. He not only fought against the Mughals but also formed alliances when necessary. He believed in self-rule and created a governance system based on fairness, discipline, and justice. His ideas about bravery, honesty, and independence still inspire millions of people today.
His words reflect his wisdom and leadership. He once said that an enemy should never be underestimated, but also should not be feared too much. He believed in always holding one’s head high and never bowing down. He also said that willpower is more important than weapons when it comes to ruling a kingdom. He strongly believed that freedom is a gift that every person has the right to receive. He also encouraged people to learn from the mistakes of others instead of making their own mistakes.
His birth anniversary is not just a celebration but also a time to remember his values and teachings. Every year, people across India pay tribute to his contributions and take inspiration from his extraordinary life.
