According to the Hindu calendar, his birth falls on the 3rd day of the Phalgun month, while in the modern calendar, it is observed on February 19. This difference has led to some people celebrating his Jayanti as per the traditional calendar, while others follow the fixed date in February.

Shivaji Maharaj is remembered as the greatest ruler of the Maratha Empire. At a time when Hindu traditions were fading under foreign rule, he worked hard to preserve them. He introduced the use of Marathi and Sanskrit in his court and administration, instead of Persian, which was the official language used by most other rulers. His ability to plan and execute strategies helped him win many battles against much larger Mughal armies. He is especially known for using guerrilla warfare, where he would launch sudden attacks and quickly retreat into the mountains. This earned him the title of "Mountain Rat" among his enemies.

Shivaji was deeply influenced by his mother, Jijabai, who was a brave and religious woman. Many people believe that he was named after Lord Shiva, but in reality, he was named after the regional goddess Shivai.
