Kerala TMC Leader PV Anvar Resigns as MLA, Supports UDF Unconditionally

Kerala MLA P.V. Anvar, who recently joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after leaving the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), resigned from his position as the MLA for Nilambur on January 13. Anvar handed over his resignation letter to Speaker A.N. Shamseer at the Legislative Assembly complex in Thiruvananthapuram.

Anvar had won the Nilambur seat as a candidate supported by the CPI(M)-led LDF, but after disagreements with the government, he decided to join TMC and serve as its state coordinator in Kerala. He had about one-and-a-half years left in his term when he decided to step down. Although he had not planned to resign earlier, Anvar said the decision was made following a video call with Mamata Banerjee, the leader of TMC. Anvar clarified that he resigned based on her suggestion and asked the Speaker to accept his resignation.

Anvar's resignation was partly driven by the possibility of being disqualified by the CPI(M)-led LDF, which might have forced him out of the legislature. After resigning, the TMC leadership in West Bengal officially announced Anvar as the Kerala state convenor. TMC expressed their support for him on social media, wishing him success in his new role.

Anvar told reporters that he had already emailed his resignation letter to the Speaker a couple of days before. He also made a dramatic announcement that he would not be contesting the upcoming by-election for Nilambur and would instead fully support the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in the region. He expressed his commitment to ensuring that the UDF candidate wins the by-poll.

Anvar made it clear that his political fight was against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his policies, which he referred to as "Pinarayism." He called on the Congress leadership to field a candidate from the Christian community in Nilambur to address the concerns of people affected by attacks from wild animals in the region. He suggested that V.S. Joy, the Malappuram DCC president, would be an ideal candidate and claimed that he could win the seat by a margin of 30,000 votes.

When asked about his stance on supporting KPCC general secretary and film personality Aryadan Shaukat, who was his rival in Nilambur, Anvar made a dismissive remark, saying "Who is he?" and added that Shaukat was more of a "film personality writing stories."

Throughout his press conference, Anvar tried to gain the trust of the UDF, explaining his previous actions in the Assembly, particularly the corruption allegations he made against Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan. Anvar claimed that he was urged by senior CPI(M) leader and Chief Minister Vijayan's political secretary, P.Sasi, to raise the allegations, which he had not verified himself. He apologized to Satheesan for the harm caused by the allegations.

Anvar also revealed that he had made disclosures about P.Sasi and a senior IPS officer, Ajithkumar, with the consent of the top leadership of the Marxist party. However, after his claims were rejected by the Chief Minister, he said that the leadership stopped answering his calls. Despite pressure from reporters, Anvar declined to name any individuals who had been involved in his disclosures.

On his decision to join TMC, Anvar mentioned his conversations with Mamata Banerjee about the critical issue of human-animal conflict, which affects several states, including Kerala. Banerjee assured him that TMC would raise this issue in Parliament and bring it to the attention of other leaders of the INDI Alliance, including Rahul Gandhi. Anvar said that his resignation as an MLA was made to address the challenges faced by the people living in the high ranges of Kerala.

Finally, Anvar addressed questions about whether the UDF would accept him back into its fold due to his association with TMC. He stated that he had already made his position clear and would leave the decision to the UDF.

Anvar, who had been elected as an independent candidate with the support of the Left in both the 2016 and 2021 elections, had formed the Democratic Movement of Kerala (DMK) two months ago after breaking away from the CPI(M). His resignation as MLA followed a series of political disputes, including his arrest for allegedly vandalizing a forest office during a protest over the death of a tribal man in an elephant attack in his constituency.
