Kerala Police have registered two FIRs and arrested six people after an 18-year-old Dalit girl from Pathanamthitta district alleged that she was sexually abused by around 62 individuals over the past five years. The girl, who is a district-level athlete, brought the shocking details to light during a recent interaction with volunteers of the Kerala Mahila Samakhya Society.
According to Pathanamthitta Superintendent of Police V.G. Vinod Kumar, the cases were filed in two separate police stations. In one case, five people were arrested, while one person was taken into custody in the second case. The SP mentioned that further investigations are ongoing, and more cases will likely be registered after verifying additional information. A deputy superintendent of police is overseeing the investigation to ensure a thorough probe into the matter.
The incident came to light during a routine field visit by the Kerala Mahila Samakhya Society. The volunteers met the girl and offered her an opportunity to share her experiences. Realizing the gravity of the situation, they immediately informed the district Child Welfare Committee (CWC). Advocate N. Rajeev, who heads the Pathanamthitta CWC, said the matter was reported to them around 15 days ago. The girl and her mother were asked to appear before the committee, where she received counseling. During these sessions, she opened up to a psychologist, recounting the sexual abuse she had been facing since the age of 13.
The girl’s family was reportedly unaware of the abuse she suffered over the years. She never spoke about it to her mother, which added to the difficulty of uncovering the truth. As a district-level athlete, she has attended multiple sports camps over the years. These settings may have provided opportunities for repeated instances of abuse, according to Rajeev.
Investigators found significant leads in the mobile phone of the girl’s father, who is an alcoholic. Many of the accused were identified through the contact list saved on the phone. The police are carefully examining the details to uncover the full extent of the crime. Psychologists working under the Nirbhaya scheme also spoke with the girl to confirm the credibility of her claims. They analyzed the phone further to identify the alleged abusers. Officials noted that the involvement of more individuals cannot be ruled out as the investigation continues.
For her safety, the girl has been moved to a shelter home under the care of the Child Welfare Committee. Authorities are committed to ensuring her protection and pursuing justice for the heinous crimes committed against her. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates are expected as more evidence is collected.
