Jasprit Bumrah begins rehab; BCCI quiet on Champions Trophy fate

India’s top fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, is gearing up to begin his rehabilitation process at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. This decision was made after an assessment by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team. Bumrah had injured his back last month during the final Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney, which raised concerns about his availability for upcoming tournaments, including the Champions Trophy.

A report from the Times of India stated that Bumrah's scan results were reviewed internally. The 31-year-old cricketer is expected to start his rehab in the next couple of days. His recovery program will include gym exercises and possibly some light bowling sessions.

BCCI's Wait-and-Watch Strategy

The selectors are in a tricky spot as the deadline to finalize the squad for the Champions Trophy is set for February 12. Despite the limited time, the BCCI is reportedly not rushing to make a decision. The board is believed to be adopting the same approach they took with all-rounder Hardik Pandya during the 2023 ODI World Cup when Pandya injured his ankle.

At that time, the BCCI waited nearly two weeks before naming Prasidh Krishna as Pandya’s replacement. A similar patient strategy might be applied to Bumrah’s case as well. A source familiar with the situation mentioned, “Even if there’s just a 1% chance, the BCCI will wait. This deadline is only for submitting the squad. If necessary, they can later request the Event Technical Committee to approve a replacement if Bumrah doesn't recover in time.”

Backup Plans in Motion

Though no official announcement has been made regarding Bumrah’s fitness status, the Indian cricket team seems to be preparing backup options. In the ongoing ODI series against England, fast bowler Harshit Rana made his debut, and Varun Chakravarthy was also added to the squad, receiving his first cap.

It remains uncertain whether Bumrah will be part of the Champions Trophy squad. For now, fans and selectors alike are hopeful that the star pacer will recover soon and return to the field.
